    2019 FLOC Bayanihan Law Student Scholarship.

    “Bayanihan” is a Tagalog word that stands for a Filipino cultural value that emphasizes helpfulness, community, and collaboration.

    Two $1000 scholarships will be awarded at a Gala Dinner on October 25, 2018.  Application deadline is October 8, 2018.

    The Corporate Criminal Liability course addresses the elements of the numerous types of white collar crimes, including theft by means of fraud and deception, with emphasis on investment, real estate, and credit card fraud, wire and mail fraud, identity theft, computer-related crimes, bribery and extortion, money laundering and R.I.C.O. violations including both federal and California statutes. Students will understand and apply the principles of criminal culpability as it pertains to conspiracies, aiding and abetting, and corporate versus individual criminal liability, as well as to understand the nature and function of federal Grand Jury proceedings as they relate to white collar crime investigations and indictments; identify the typical evidentiary issues attendant to a criminal white collar crime investigation and prosecution; and understand the challenges white collar crime situations present to the legal practitioner in terms of ethics and the advisement and representation of clients.  The course is taught as a research and writing seminar, with a research paper or similar project in lieu of a final examination.

    Hello Thurgood Marshall Bar Association (“TMBA”) Members, Friends and Supporters:

    Happy Juneteenth! This is an American holiday that commemorates the June 19, 1865 end of slavery in the U.S by way of the Emancipation Proclamation.

    Illunimation Event members outside house smilingWe would like to thank all of the TMBA Members and Supporters who volunteered and donated school supplies to the Illumination Foundation at our first volunteer event on May 11, 2018. We had a great time making crafts, doing yoga/dance, and playing dodgeball with the wonderful children at the Children’s Resource Center.

    A very special thank you to all of the folks who came out on a Friday during work hours to make the event a success, including: Sherry S. Bragg (Weintraub Tobin), Kimberly LaSalle (Law Offices of Kimberly La Salle); Alessandra Whipple, Daniel Whipple, Christian Amos, Danielle Chavez, Irena Sims, Lisa Easterbrook, Kathy Hoogeveen, Elizabeth Iturbide (Carothers DiSante & Freudenberger); and Porsche G. Clarke (State Compensation Insurance Fund). Our update includes pictures from the event. We look forward to working with the Illumination Foundation again in November 2018 as part of our efforts this year to combat homelessness in Orange County.

    This week, TMBA is co-sponsoring the Orange County Bar Associations Diversity Summer Social Where Community Connects on Thursday, June 21, 2018, 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. There will be a host of members from the OCBA, TMBA, and other affiliate bars at the event. We hope to see you there.     Next, June 25, 2018 is the deadline to submit an application for an open seat on the OCBA Board of Directors. Nominations are being accepted for three seats for Directors At Large and Office of Secretary. We would love to see more TMBA Members on the OCBA Board of Directors so we encourage you to apply. We have attached a OCBA-Board-Application-Deadline-06-25-2018 for your convenience.

    Dear Thurgood Marshall Bar Association:
     
    I am so happy to provide the April 2018 update to our members and supporters! 
     
    We just recently had a successful “AfterGlow” Mixer on April 7, 2018 to celebrate the Inaugural Gala of the Black Law Students Association of UCI School of Law (“BLSA”).  Congratulations to BLSA! Thank you to everyone who came out to support BLSA and TMBA at the Gala and AfterGlow event.   
     
    Our Board is hard at work to plan TMBA’s first ever Volunteer Service Activity in collaboration with the Illumination Foundation, whose mission is to “Break the Cycle of Homelessness.” 
     
    On Friday, May 11, 2018, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., TMBA members will volunteer at the Illumination Foundation’s Afterschool program for homeless children between the ages of five and twelve years old.  At the event we will participate in arts and crafts and yoga with all the children. TMBA is also making a donation of backpacks and school supplies for the 45 children involved in the program.
     
    Please join us on May 11th for this wonderful event. WE NEED TEN VOLUNTEERS to donate their time to serve alongside TMBA Board Members. Please email us if you would like to sign up for the event.

    Happy Women’s History Month:

    TMBA would like to recognize all of the spectacular women who serve as dedicated members of the legal profession.

    We are excited to announce that TMBA has partnered with a local non-profit, The Illumination Foundation, for the 2018 - 2019 term.  The Illumination Foundation works with homeless families and children in Orange County to provide housing, resources and suppprt for those in need. 

    We will be donating our time to serve and mentor homeless children that are part of the Illumination Foundation’s Children’s Resource Center, an after school enrichment program for homeless children. We hope that you all can join us in May 2018 and November 2018 for our volunteer night at the Children Resource Center. Stay tuned as there are more details to come.

    We are fast approaching the Inaugugal UCI Law Black Law Student Association Gala, scheduled for April 7, 2018. TMBA is a sponsor of the event and will have multiple board members in attendance.  Please visit this link if you still have not yet purchased tickets.

    In celebration of this monumental event for UCI Law, TMBA will host an after party (“The Afterglow”) at Mesa Bar in Costa Mesa from 9 pm to 1 am. We hope that you can join us. The flyer to the event is attached. 

    Finally, the Western State College of Law Law Review is hosting its 2018 Law Review Symposium on April 7th from 9:30 am to 2 pm at the Western State College of Law in Irvine.  The topic of the event will be Discrimination in the Legal Profession and speakers will include the Honorable Victoria Kolakowski, the Honorable Halim Dhanidina, the Honorable Maria D. Hernandez and other experts in the field. This Symposium has been approved to provide 4 MCLE credits for attendees. The flyer for the event is attached.

    As you can see, there is so much going on already this year. To continue to support us, please make sure that your TMBA membership is up to date. All funds are used to support TMBA’s mission, including providing scholarships to our Law Student Ambassadors.     A Message from Our President

    Hello Thurgood Marshall Bar Association (TMBA) Members and Supporters!

    Happy Black History Month! TMBA is on the heels of a very successful Inaugural Scholarship Awards and Installation Dinner. Thank you so much to everyone who attended! The event would not have been possible without our spectacular sponsors, Carothers, DiSante, & Freudenberger, Crowell & Moring, JAMS, Chapman Law School, Western State College of Law, Robinson Calcagnie, Inc., Littler Mendelson, Howard Law P.C., Orange County Women Lawyers Association, Hispanic Bar Association, Black Chamber of Orange County, and the Diversity & Social Justice Forum. We are so grateful for the incredible support.

    We would also like to congratulate all of our award recipients, Judge Karen L. Robinson (Legal Excellence Award), Jay Austin (Lifetime Leadership  Award), Professor Michelle Goodwin (Professor of the Year), and our Law Student Ambassadors, Sandra Davidson, Bradford Oduguwa, Rick Reener Jr., Canon Thomas, Andre X.     TMBA has two wonderful events planned for this month. We hope that you are able to join us in these celebrations. First, we will be present at the 35th Annual Black History Parade and Cultural Faire located in Anaheim, California on Saturday, February 3, 2018.  Please join us for a day filled with food, music, and celebration of Black History. It is truly a wonderful and family-friendly event, and I encourage all members to attend.

    On February 22, 2018, TMBA is co-sponsoring the “Meet and Greet Social”  mixer with the Diversity & Inclusion and Young Lawyers Division of the Orange County Bar Association (see attached flyer).  I hope to see many of you at this event, which is aimed at promoting diversity and inclusion, while bringing various members of the OCBA together for networking.

    As you can see, TMBA is off to a great start for 2018. With sixteen installed board members, there are endless possibilities to the things we can accomplish this year. Please make sure to pay for your membership dues this year so that TMBA can continue hosting events and scholarship opportunities that support our mission to connect, support, and increase the Black legal community in Orange County.
