As the US continues its long-overdue reckoning with systemic racism, its history of ethnocentrism has taken center stage. Xenophobia fueled by the highest office in the land and shrouded by the COVID-19 pandemic has led to exposed hatred and increased violence towards Asian, Asian-American and Pacific Islander communities. Earlier this week, our country was once again reminded of the danger of misguided fear as 8 women, 6 of whom were of Asian descent, were murdered in a killing spree by a bias-motivated perpetrator. These horrific slayings were a hate crime!
We are angry and appalled by the ongoing violence against members of Asian, Asian-American and Pacific Islander communities. Thurgood Marshall Bar Association condemns racism, prejudice discrimination and injustice in any form against any community.
In 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King said:
“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. Never again can we afford to live with the narrow, provincial 'outside agitator' idea. Anyone who lives inside the United States can never be considered an outsider anywhere within its bounds.”
LAW STUDENT corner
strives to partner with law students to provide mentorship and engage
and connect them with TMBA and the legal community. Each year, TMBA
selects a student from each Orange County law school to actively
participate and attend TMBA events and serve as a liaison for their
respective schools to promote TMBA events and its mission. Each
recipient will also be awarded a scholarship to use toward academic
expenses. The LSAs selected showed a commitment to promoting diversity,
community outreach, and leadership at their school. We are pleased to spotlight the 2021-2022 TMBA Law School Ambassadors each month!
